Frequently asked questions
- What is a Notified Body number?
- A unique 4-digit identifier (e.g. "1023") assigned by the European Commission when a conformity assessment body is designated under an EU legislation. It appears next to the CE marking on products that went through third-party conformity assessment, and is looked up in the NANDO database.
- Is every Notified Body designated for every legislation?
- No. A Notified Body’s designation is scoped to specific legislation (MDR, IVDR, PED, Machinery Regulation, Construction Products, etc.) and, within that, to specific product categories or annexes. A body designated for machinery has no authority to certify medical devices.
- How is this different from searching NANDO directly?
- NANDO lists designations but rarely current contact details or responsiveness — this directory adds verified contact information and lets you describe your product once to reach several matching bodies, instead of researching and cold-emailing each one from NANDO.
- What if the legislation I need isn’t in the filter list?
- Use "Get matched with a Notified Body" and describe your product — the request goes out based on your description, not only the filter list, so it can still reach bodies designated under legislation not yet broken out as a filter.
